Town of Canton Sewer Rehabilitation Program

Freeman Lecture Centennial

On April 8, 2025, the BSCES Freeman Committee hosted more than 150 in-person and online participants for the annual Freeman Lecture, held at Wentworth Institute of Technology. The Freeman Lecture carries out the bequest of John Ripley Freeman, one of New England’s most influential civil engineers, which is intended to support the engagement of young people in BSCES. Freeman’s pioneering work in hydraulics, public water systems, dam design, and fire protection helped to lay the foundation for modern civil engineering infrastructure. This year is the 100th anniversary of Mr. Freeman’s bequest to BSCES. ... Read more

Empowering Communities: Accelerating Flood Resilience through Local Leadership

As climate change heightens coastal flood risks, the Wharf District Council (WDC) in Boston offers a new model for accelerating flood resilience initiatives: community-led resilience projects. By leading the design and stakeholder engagement process, the WDC successfully developed a flood protection 

plan in 2023 and remarkably secured unanimous support from a diverse group of property owners. This approach, documented in the WDC's recently issued Neighborhood Resiliency Project Handbook, demonstrates how empowering local organizations can complement and expand government-led efforts to build community resiliency. ... The BSCES Newsletter Editorial Board is seeking Society members who are willing to join the board and help solicit, write, and/or edit articles for publication in BSCESNews. Members of the editorial board participate in eleven 30-minute video conferences per year to develop the ten issues of the newsletter that are published annually.

 

The editorial board also encourages members to submit articles for publication in BSCESNews. These can be related to an issue’s theme or on any topic of interest to civil engineers. Click here to view article submission requirements.
