Historic Brick Masonry Sewers: Inspection, Analysis, and Repair

Brick masonry sewers are critical infrastructure assets that are integral to wastewater systems in cities throughout the US including in Boston, New York, Washington DC, and other major metropolitan areas. Many of these sewers were constructed over 100 years ago and have been in continuous operation. The sewers are challenging to access for inspection and maintenance due to lack of redundancy and high flow rates. This presentation will discuss the inspection, analysis, and rehabilitation of brick sewers and review a case study of a complex rehabilitation project.

DC Water’s Northwest Boundary Trunk Sewer, a critical infrastructure component, was originally constructed in the 1800s. During a scheduled 2023 inspection, missing bricks were observed in the crown, and reinspection in July 2024 identified substantial further deterioration. After visual inspection and thorough analysis, the project team worked together to implement a rapid turnkey design-build solution. This presentation will detail the project challenges faced, the rehabilitation options evaluated, and the implementation process from discovery to completion, showcasing a successful collaboration in a high-profile area.
