Building Together: How One Skanska Delivers Integrated Infrastructure Solutions

By Edward Breed, ENV SP, Project Manager, Skanska USA Civil Northeast

At Skanska, the phrase “One Skanska” reflects how we deliver work in practice. It is an operating model built around collaboration across business units to manage complexity, evaluate risk from multiple perspectives, and deliver projects across a range of delivery methods.

In the Northeast, this approach is best described as local presence with global strength. Our teams understand the owners, regulatory frameworks, and logistical constraints unique to the region, while also drawing on the technical depth and resources of Skanska’s broader organization.

BSCES President's Report

By Richard Matson, PE, Team Leader, Bridge & Tunnel Inspections, AECOM

Spring is in the air and Boston has emerged from the coldest winter in over 20 years. While the winter months have been disruptive to some events, BSCES has been hard at work scheduling many events over the spring months and we are preparing more for the summer and fall months. We continue to advocate our student involvement with BSCES and, in April, the MIT ASCE student chapter hosted our monthly executive committee meeting on campus and the Northeastern ASCE student chapter hosted our YMG monthly meeting. Having some of our meetings at college campuses is a great way to network with students and to have more meaningful and engaging one-on-one conversations. ... Read more

Understanding The Requirement for Turbidity Monitoring During Pile Driving: NOAA OMAO Ship & Supply Facility Relocation Project Case Study

By Isabella Kennedy, Pre-Construction Manager/Estimator, GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc., and Brendon Murphy, EIT, Senior Project Manager, GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc.

This paper examines turbidity impacts associated with marine construction, with a focus on automated monitoring during pile driving at the NOAA OMAO Ship & Supply Facility Relocation project in Newport, Rhode Island. Buoy-mounted turbidity sensors were deployed during critical fish spawning periods to collect near real-time data, demonstrating that automated monitoring can effectively support regulatory compliance while reducing labor compared to manual methods. Results highlight both the value of continuous turbidity monitoring for protecting sensitive marine ecosystems and the importance of accounting for sensor fouling and maintenance in saltwater environments to ensure data accuracy. ... Optimizing and Evaluating the Performance of Green Infrastructure in a Washington DC Streetscape

By Nicole Holmes, PE, LEED AP, Sustainability and Innovation Practice Lead, Nitsch Engineering

The Kennedy Street Green Infrastructure Streetscape project demonstrates how a decentralized, interconnected system of green infrastructure can substantially reduce stormwater discharges to the combined sewer and provide enhanced community benefits. Pre‑ and post‑construction monitoring demonstrated a 72% reduction in wet‑weather flow volume to the combined sewer system, validating the effectiveness of these strategies in meeting and exceeding regulatory retention goals and supporting DC Water's broader goals for reducing combined sewer overflows. ... Communicating About Climate Change: Sharing difficult news without freaking everyone out

By Kate Riley, MPA, Principal Community Relations Manager, Kleinfelder

Climate change is no longer an abstract concept or a distant future problem. For many communities, it shows up in deeply personal ways: a beloved old bridge that can’t withstand future storms, a historic riverside restaurant that floods again and again, or a coastal home slowly slipping into the sea. These are not just technical challenges; they touch identity, memory, and a sense of place.

That’s why communicating about climate change requires more than models, maps, and projections. It requires empathy, trust, and a genuine commitment to working alongside communities rather than simply delivering bad news. ... Read more
