Speaker: Sam Wilbur, PE, Senior Project Engineer, Delve Underground
Installing a new underground transmission circuit through a dense urban environment can require multiple construction methodologies to be utilized. Some obstacles like railroad corridors and water bodies require the use of trenchless construction techniques like horizontal directional drilling, utility tunneling and auger boring. To ensure success the project team needs to be adaptable to modifications in trenchless techniques in the event of unforeseen obstacles. This presentation examines adaptations to trenchless construction through a successful case study. It highlights how utility tunneling replaced traditional auger bore method to install conduit in bedrock beneath seven railroad tracks adjacent to two bridges and highway infrastructure. As part of adaptation, it was necessary to extract and replace auger bore trenchless equipment to salvage the crossing alignment all while protecting abutting infrastructure and conforming to permitting agency requirements.
