Fall Mini Lecture Series: Cognitive Infrastructure and AI-Supported Design: The Next Decade in Structural Engineering

Wednesday, November 5, 2025 (6:00 PM - 7:30 PM) (EST)

Description

Sponsored by the Structural Engineering Institute Boston Chapter

Session 1: Wednesday November 5, 2025

Cognitive Infrastructure and AI-Supported Design: The Next Decade in Structural Engineering
Speaker: Dr. David A. Lattanzi, Ph.D., P.E., F.SEI, F.ASCE, Professor & John Toups Facility Fellow – George Mason University

AI now permeates our day-to-day lives, yet its impact on the structural engineering profession is still unclear. This talk will present two emergent applications for AI in structural engineering, along with the critical questions that must be considered prior to their implementation. We will explore how AI is poised to revolutionize the design process and the potential for imbuing intelligence into our infrastructure systems. Perhaps most importantly, we will discuss the ethical implications, and what it means for the education and training of engineers today.

Session 2: Wednesday December 10, 2025

Unlocking the Value of AI for Smarter Infrastructure Management
Speaker: Dr. Fei Han, Ph.D., P.E., F.SEI, F.ASCE, Assistant Professor – University of New Hampshire

AI is more than just a buzzword—it’s a powerful tool that can help engineers and agencies better maintain and manage infrastructure throughout its lifecycle. This presentation will highlight practical examples of AI applications in inventory development, condition assessment, environmental prediction, and decision support. We’ll explore how an AI “agent” can guide maintenance planning for Boston’s bridge network over a 20-year horizon. We will use Super Mario to explain how AI actually works in a simple, relatable way.
