Low Impact Development Strategies: Shaping the Cities of the Future

Thursday, May 1, 2025 (12:00 PM - 1:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

Speakers:

Andrea Braga, PE, CPESC, Principal Engineer, Jacobs

Andrea Tavera, M.S., Water Resources Engineer, Jacobs

Extreme precipitation and increasing impervious surfaces lead to more runoff, overwhelmed storm sewer systems, flooding, and water quality issues, resulting in significant damage and loss. Low Impact Development (LID) strategies aim to mitigate these problems by mimicking natural hydrologic conditions to reduce runoff and improve water quality.

A key component of LID, “blue-green” stormwater infrastructure (BGSI), combines the water quality and community-enriching benefits of “green” infrastructure with the flood reduction and climate resiliency benefits of “blue” infrastructure. As a combined strategy, BGSI encompasses both types of infrastructure and often includes innovative, “floodable” systems such as “floodable parks,” “wet plazas,” and “retention boulevards” that can collectively provide a range of both stormwater-related benefits and other community benefits. Andrea Braga will provide an overview of BGSI practices and strategies, discuss planning and design considerations for BGSI, and present case studies on how public spaces can be transformed into multi-purpose stormwater management features.

Andrea Tavera will present additional case studies where LID strategies were applied using the InfoDrainage stormwater model. She will discuss how the results from these studies demonstrate the effectiveness of implementing LID systems in reducing peak flows and enhancing water quality.
