Speakers:
Frank Salmon, Senior Project Manager, Skanska
Michael Sullivan, PE, Project Manager, CHA
The Maffa Way and Mystic Avenue bridges serve as key links between Somerville and Boston in the Sullivan Square area. With both bridges being nearly structurally deficient and beyond their useful life span, MassDOT has undertaken a project to replace this critical infrastructure. In addition to replacing the bridges, the project seeks to improve bicycle, pedestrian, and transit accommodations. Reconstruction of the bridges has required coordination with three railroad entities with infrastructure beneath the bridges, utility relocation, and temporary maintenance of traffic. In addition to replacement of the two bridges, the project includes new corridor improvements along Lombardi Way including dedicated bicycle lanes, bus only travel way, and upgraded pedestrian accommodations.
Presenters will include members of the Skanska construction team and members of the CHA design team. After the presentation, there will be a guided tour of the project site, where attendees will see the construction progress to date. Please note that proper PPE consisting of a hard hat, safety vest, eye protection, and boots will be required. All attendees are required to sign a liability waiver and return it to bsces@engineers.org in advance of the tour.
There will be a networking social hour to follow the tour at the nearby Tavern at the End of the World. Appetizers will be served and are included in the registration fee.
