The Simmons Living and Learning Center is a 400,000 SF, 19 story building directly on Simmons University’s main campus. It sits in the footprint of their old Science Building. The Living and Learning Center will include 1,071 dorm beds, a college-sized swimming pool, gymnasium, rowing tank, a green roof on the fourth floor, and dining facilities on the first two floors. The new building will house all Simmons students and be their main location for athletic facilities and dining.
The project has completed driving all 333 steel H-piles approximately 150 feet into the ground. Levels 1-6 are typical slab on metal deck, but levels 7-18 are precast hollow core plank. The façade is composed of over 600,000 hand-laid bricks, 304 multistory punched windows, and 31,000 SF of unitized curtain wall. The façade will be constructed using 17 mast climbers around the perimeter. Demolition of the existing Science Building began in the spring of 2023 and the project is scheduled to be completed in late 2026.
Presenters will include members of the Skanska team and members of the design team.
All attendees must sign a liability waiver and return to bsces@engineers.org in advance of the tour.
